What is hip synovitis?
Hip synovitis is an inflammation of the synovial membrane that covers the hip joint. This membrane is a thin layer of tissue that produces synovial fluid, which lubricates and nourishes the joint.
When the synovial membrane becomes inflamed, an excessive amount of synovial fluid is produced, leading to swelling and pain in the hip.
Types of hip synovitis
There are two main types of hip synovitis:
Transient synovitis of the hip:
It is a temporary condition that usually occurs in children between the ages of 3 and 10.
Chronic hip synovitis:
It is a more serious condition that can last for months or years and affects both adults and children.
Causes of hip synovitis
This condition can be caused by a variety of factors, such as a hip injury, infection, autoimmune condition, or an allergic reaction to a substance.
Transient synovitis of the hip usually occurs after a minor injury or infection to the hip.
While chronic hip synovitis can be caused by an autoimmune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Symptoms of hip synovitis
Symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the condition, but usually include:
- Hip pain.
- Lameness or difficulty settling the weight.
- Stiffness in the hip.
- Weakness in the affected leg.
- Difficulty moving as a result of pain.
In some cases, there may be visible swelling in the hip and a fever may occur when it comes to an infection.
Diagnosis
The process of diagnosing hip synovitis usually begins with a physical exam and review of the patient’s symptoms.
Your doctor may order an X-ray or MRI to evaluate your hip joint and rule out other conditions, such as a bone fracture.
In some cases, a joint puncture may be performed to remove synovial fluid from the hip and evaluate it in the laboratory.

Treatment of Hip Synovitis
Treatment of hip synovitis depends on the severity of the condition and its underlying cause.
In mild cases, analgesics and anti-inflammatories may be recommended to reduce discomfort. However, in severe cases, surgical solutions such as hip arthroscopy can be used to repair the membrane or remove it completely, as the case may be.
