Symptoms of Gout in the Hip

  • Pain and swelling in the hip area: Attacks of hip pain can be intense and sudden, accompanied by swelling and redness.
  • Inflammation and tenderness of the surrounding skin: The skin over the affected joint may become inflamed and tender to the touch.
  • Redness or warmth: The affected area may have redness and a feeling of warmth.
  • Limitation in walking and/or lameness: Mobility may be restricted and a limp may appear due to severe pain.

Diagnosing Gout in the Hip

Diagnosis is based on a combination of symptoms and specific tests:

Physical exam and testing of uric acid levels

Your doctor may perform a physical exam to evaluate your symptoms and also order tests to measure uric acid levels in your blood or synovial fluid.

Imaging Tests (X-ray, CT Scan, MRI)

These tests help identify the buildup of uric acid crystals in the hip joint and rule out other conditions that may be causing symptoms.
